Handover of the refurbished Theatre 2 at Milton Keynes University Hospital (MKUH) marks the completion of another successful total turnkey project for Medical Air Technology (MAT).
MAT was brought in by Milton Keynes University Hospital NHS Foundation Trust as Principal Designer and Contractor for the refurbishment of Theatre 2 and its upgrade to an ultraclean facility, suitable for orthopaedic surgery.
An established market-leader in the field of healthcare critical ventilation, MAT was awarded the contract as it offered a short lead-in period and provided a robust technical submission.
In addition to the major upgrade of Theatre 2, MAT designed and installed a centralised UPS system to serve all four of the hospital’s theatres and recovery, and upgraded the electrical infrastructure to support the new installation. A new room layout also means teams can respond quicker in emergencies.
The project went so well that the Trust has also appointed MAT to carry out the refurbishment and upgrade of Theatre 1 to bring it up to the same high standard.
The newly equipped Theatre 2
The operating theatres at MKUH are are divided between two physically separate areas: Phase 1 Theatres – emergency and trauma, and Phase 2 Theatres – elective surgery. Theatre 2 is located within Phase 1.
The MAT ECO-flow ultraclean ventilation (UCV) canopy lies at the centre of the newly refurbished theatre. In line with the requirements of HTM 03-01 (2021), the canopy generates a ‘clean zone’ about the patient bed and clinical team that eliminates dangerous airborne particles for safer surgery.
As well as the ECO-flow ventilation canopy, MAT installed a range of specialist equipment including pendants, a theatre control panel, a fully compliant air handling unit, ventilation and controls. Upgrade of the theatre fabric encompassed new floors, Whiterock hygienic wall cladding, and doors and furniture to complete this major refurbishment. The full electrical installation was carried out by C&B Electrical Contractors Ltd.
The Trust now has the most advanced and compliant environment for carrying out orthopaedic surgery, ensuring its patients receive the best possible care when they need it most.

Anthony Marsh, Director of Facilities and Estates at MKUH, says, “We’re absolutely delighted to have completed a full refresh of our Trauma Theatre, incorporating a state-of-the-art Ultra Clean Ventilation (UCV) system and a comprehensive modern refit. This investment reflects our ongoing commitment to providing the highest standards of care in a safe, efficient, and future-ready environment.”
MAT designs, manufactures, and installs bespoke critical ventilation systems and turnkey project solutions for new build and refurbishment healthcare and life science projects. The team has extensive experience of working in live environments and fully understands the challenges around delivering a project within an operational scenario.
In addition, the company’s facilities management division, MAT FM, provides a range of competitively priced and highly effective service and maintenance packages for all core products and turnkey solutions offered by MAT or other suppliers, ensuring that equipment is maintained, serviced and validated correctly for optimum performance and efficiency.
