MAT DELIVERS TWIN TURNKEY UCV OPERATING THEATRE

PROJECT FOR WALSALL HEALTHCARE NHS TRUST

A twin ultraclean ventilation (UCV) operating theatre project carried out by Medical Air Technology (MAT) for Walsall Healthcare NHS Trust illustrates the many benefits of a employing a specialist contractor to deliver a total turnkey solution.


MAT was brought in to design and refurbish two new ultraclean operating theatre suites, working closely with the Trust’s estates team under main contractor, Tilbury Douglas Construction.


The project was delivered successfully in two phases, and MAT was thrilled to receive this glowing feedback from the Trust, which shows the high level of client satisfaction that can be achieved when all teams involved work closely together, equally committed to achieving an outstanding final result.

Having a team who know what they are doing with regard to constructing CL3 laboratories proved critical in this type of project. Their knowledge of the building requirements, application of the build, and production of the finished product was seamless.

“The MAT team were efficient, accurate and incredibly tidy. During the build, everything was orderly and the team were active in keeping all access and work areas neat and tidy. There was minimal disruption to the Pathology laboratory/offices/parking, and all major deliveries and use of the crane for siting of the AHU were carried out at weekends or out of regular office hours to minimise the impact.

“There were hiccups along the way – nesting seagulls, for example, which delayed the project, especially when installing the AHU. All delays were managed with minimal overall impact on the project. “We would recommend this team for any laboratory development. They were brilliant – knowledgeable, accurate and efficient. We couldn’t be more pleased with how MAT managed the build, and ultimately delivered the finished product.”

Walsall Manor Hospital – Theatres 5 and 6

The Trust wanted to totally refit two of its operating theatres, upgrading them to ultraclean and replacing the critical ventilation systems, thus making them suitable for a wider range of surgery, including orthopaedics. To achieve this, MAT installed its energy-efficient ECO-flow™ 3200 ultraclean ventilation (UCV) canopies, complete with pendants. Bender UK supplied operating lights, theatre control panels, picture archiving and communication systems (PACS) and IPS/UPS power systems. The theatre suites and exit bay were fully refurbished, with new air handling plant, heat recovery, ductwork, controls, doors, furniture, sanitaryware, and walls and floor finishes.


The short programme only allowed nine weeks per theatre, with one week between phases. One challenge MAT engineers faced was the difficult high level access to the plantroom and theatres, which was reached via a scaffold across a courtyard. However, this did not prevent the project from progressing smoothly and being delivered on time and to budget.
